A painting is more than just a pretty face. Each has a story behind it, a reason for being. And if you are drawn to an artwork, that story probably connects with your own life-experience. Here's the view from my end of the brush! --Shona Macomber

I Planted Hope...
I planted an assortment of bulbs the other day. As I was digging the holes and being selective about which bulb would go where, I was picturing in my mind the spots of lavendar, purples, pinks, and whites that would add color to my usually very bleak garden next spring. I rarely do much planning ahead in my life. I seem to take it as it comes, enjoying spontanaity and suprise (and dealing with the stress of living that way), so I've never taken the time to plant something I can't see for a while. I want that color NOW. As I was covering the wait-for-later future flowers, I realized that for those few moments, I was living HOPE. I was actively, physically, experiencing hope. I was moved to drop everything, sit down in my studio and sketch up this painting. Funny thing is, I couldn't bring it to life with color for another week or so. There it was again: living hope. I have a feeling that from now on my garden will always have bulbs blooming in Spring...
