There are times when I want to break away from the demands of watercolor painting. Some mediums encourage and lead Creative Response rather than Artistic Thought. That's a complicated way of saying that some paintings are more relaxing to do than others. I find watercolor more therapeutic than relaxing. It engages my mind with color movement and control, and with cherishing white space, which once lost is no longer an option. A lot of thinking goes into all that. It has become automatic, but it takes energy. So a switch to a more forgiving medium is a vacation in painting form. One of the most fun "vacations" for me is collage. It's where I started when an art teacher introduced me to mix-media painting. I was ten at the time, which may be why I associate collage with fun to this day.
"Fresh Flowers, Local Honey" is a collage/acrylic mix. I gave the painting this name after overhearing a customer in a store talk about the wonders of local honey, especially in treating her allergies. So a jar of honey seemed to go with flowers, both from the people-point of view as well as the Bee's. I can't live without either one!
The painting is available through La Petite Maison in Jamestown (lapetitemaisononline.com) 16x16"
