Tickle-the-Toes Day

The process of creating a painting can take several paths. The artist can work directly from life, from a photo, or even from the plein-air painting itself. The title painting (top) started out as a small watercolor sketch. I was captivated by the green and pink color scheme created by old roses growing in a yet older tree. Even the roof in the background building seemed to participate in the colorful show. I used reference photos and the sketch to paint the scene and ended up with... a scene. It didn't seem to come to life for me. The painting ended up being about the fountain, which truthfully doesn't speak to me. Those roses do. They call and invite you to enter into the secret place beyond them. So I painted again, this time with human (and other) interaction. The girl needed a friend, probably a dog, but I love goats. So you are invited to join them. Imagine what lies beyond this welcoming entrance!
